My First Flight

My first flight took place about 1958-59 when my dad rented this Piper Cub and flew my mom and my sister and I to Georgia to see our uncle and aunt. I was born in 1955, so I was 3 or 4 in this picture. I'm the younger one with my hands up. Looks like I am pretty excited about getting in the airplane. My dad started out as a farmer and then decided flying was what he wanted to do. He had a long career as a cargo pilot, flying government contracts. We moved around the country as he was stationed at various Air Force bases. He was not military, but sometimes it felt like it. I got to fly with my dad many times over the years and he even let me sit in the right seat (the co-pilot's seat) when he flew corporate jets near the end of his career. Growing up around airplanes, I never thought I would one day work in an aviation archive. Now that I know more about aviation history and flying, I can appreciate my dad's love of flying even more. My dad passed away in 2009.
