Aviation Blog 2

With another impending winter storm to hit us tonight (potentially) and into tomorrow, the big topic of the news is flight cancellations. USA Today states that by just 11am this morning already 750 plus flights have been canceled or delayed. These aren’t even numbers including post-Super Bowl flight cancellations on Sunday and Monday. The most common complaint and reason for grounding the aircraft is poor visibility and gusty winds carrying in snow and ice. This can really put a damper on traveler’s plans, especially when they may not even be in one of these impacted areas when their scheduled aircraft gets grounded elsewhere and is unable to make it. To ease the frustration that can be felt by many, most airlines offer flexibility associated with changing flight times and getting people where they need to be.

Luckily with technology today, people can even check the status of their flight via special fight tracker applications on their phones. USA today even shows their own flight tracker across the county that is available to check the status in various areas even by just looking at the colored indicator green, yellow, or red to indicate the severity of the fight situation at that particular location. The link can be found here (http://www.usatoday.com/travel/flight-tracker/) to access and explore the system. You can track anything from general airport status to departures, arrivals, and specific flight numbers.
It is really interesting to think how advanced technology is between meteorology to predict and track these storms, aviation advances that allow planes to  even travel in some weather that would have even been unheard of in the early 1900's, and the availability of updates to those counting on this form of transportation.
