Unmanned drones deliver beer and legislation falls behind technology.
One of the newest innovations in aviation is the unmanned drone, and while you will usually hear this in the context of shady military operations, small scale drones are finding their way into the business world. The Lakemaid Beer company recently released a video displaying an ad for the fast approaching new service: drone delivery. Though Amazon has already been notably working on drone delivery systems, the lighter cargo and the ease of access of a frozen lake in Wisconsin versus a highly populated city has given Lakemaid Beer the edge. However, the FAA quickly put the idea on ice, as current shortcomings in legislation over unmanned drones could lead to chaos. While the FAA did imply a possibility of the service being available in 2015, I, personally, find it unlikely given the current rate at which legislation in this country is written.
All of this aside, the story is wonderful example of the dynamic world of technology and the regulations covering it. Given another decade or two, its not unthinkable that the majority of goods will be delivered, and that stores will be largely replaced by warehouses/shipping centers. Why would I drive some where to buy my groceries when I can have them delivered to my door just by placing an order on my smart phone and paying with credit, as, of course, the widespread use of this technology would also make physical money largely useless.
