Aviation Blog #3

As many have heard in the recent month, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 went missing after losing contact an hour after takeoff with air traffic control on March 8th, 2014. It was carrying 12 crew members and 227 passengers from 14 nations. What ensued was the largest search and rescue effort in history initiated by many different nations.

The fact that a plane of this size went missing without a trace is staggering and definitely news-worthy in the world of aviation. The plane was a Boeing 777-200ER which is the world's largest twinjet engine aircraft. Initially the search took place in the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea. After military radar data and "pings" from a satellite indicated Flight 370 had traveled over the Indian Ocean, the search shifted towards that area.

On March 24th, the Malaysian government concluded beyond reasonable doubt that the airplane went down in the southern Indian ocean with no survivors and minimal, if any at all, debris. Acoustic signals consistent with underwater locator beacons found on flight recorders were detected, but no confirmed crash site has been found as of yet.

Hopefully in the coming year more information is uncovered and the mystery of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is uncovered.
