This paper is pretty cool. This paper talks about a nuclear powered aircraft that was being developed by the Air Force. The aircraft was based on the B-36 Peacemaker.  The B-36’s engines would be replaced with GE-X39’s. These engines were turbojet engines that were modified to use the heat from the nuclear reactor rather than jet fuel. Only one X-6, the name of the prototype aircraft, was built and it never successfully flew using nuclear power. The Russians had a similar program, but their program was shut down shortly after the American program was shutdown.
