Wings Assessment #1

1. What impact did flight have on life in the twentieth century?

The dawn of flight had a tremendous impact on the human race in the twentieth century. As it evolved, the record breaking Wright Flyer paved the way for aviation machines that would fight our wars, unlock 
previously difficult-to-reach cities of the earth, and enable the rapid spread of ideas to create a globalized economy. World War I was the first military conflict that involved the widespread use of the airplane. Bombers, fighters, and ground-attack airplanes were some of the names given to groups of planes for the specific role they played. The use of these planes in conflict led to massive destruction the likes of which had never been seen in any war before. Nations suffered many more casualties, thus, had to be much more strategic in their operations. The use of planes in would continue in every war that followed, as a new weapon was born.

Island colonies or nations that had many natural boundaries within them became unlocked and linked to the rest of their nation and the world thanks to aviation. The vast expanse of the Soviet Union did not seem so infinite. The mountainous regions in China now seemed more like speed bumps. The world’s massive oceans appeared more like a large puddle or a small pond. The world was connected in a way that had been previously unseen.

As commercial airlines began to spring up in the major cities across the world, people now had a much quicker, more direct route to link up with distant friends, family, or colleagues. This was the impetus for the creation of new industries that catered to the needs of these world-travelers.  Tourism began to boom and flying became a very luxurious attraction. Ideas spread and businesses previously rooted to their home nation now had the chance to become global and expand their reach. The global economy became solidified with the dawn of aviation.
  

2. Why did it take so long for man to realize the dream of flight?

“They could have done it,” is the phrase that many historians use when posed with the question of why the ancient Egyptian, Etruscan, or Carthaginian people of the world did not fly. The technology for flight existed long before it was first put into practice. However, the amount of trials and errors, physical calculations, and engineering that went into building the first gliders and airplanes took thousands of years to compile. Refined devices for measuring had yet to be developed. However, all of these arguments pertain to winged flight. Hotter than air buoyant flight was an entirely separate issue.

Evidence that balloon flight would have been possible for the Incan people of South America was evident when two scientists were carried 380 feet in the air by an aircraft called the Condor I that was made entirely of materials and assembled by processes both of which the Inca had easy access to  in their lifetime. The main theory behind why the Inca never tried it was a slip of the imagination. Technological breakthroughs often come after a eureka moment: when someone draws a connection or inspiration from something staring them right in the face. With winged-flight, this moment was the observation of winged birds soaring across the sky, or beetles and insects weaving their way between the shrubbery of forests. All the inspiration for balloon powered flight was the rising smoke from burning fires.

Seventeenth and eighteenth century philosophers paved the way for the balloon through their study of the atmosphere’s physical and chemical attributes. Realization that “air” behaved like a liquid in that it could be pumped in or out of a vessel  was a key inspiration for the thought of human flight. With the Montgolfier brothers’ balloons, the realization of the dream of flight finally came into fruition.
  
  
6. How did the United States government and other countries respond to the Wrights’ efforts to sell their invention?

As the Wright’s were perfecting their flying machine, they approached U.S. War Department officials in January of 1905. It would soon turn out that, at that juncture, there was little interest in the Wrights’ specific flying machine. This, however, was not due to the U.S. Army’s lack of interest in flying, but simply due to the lack of proof and the fact that U.S. Army support for the Langley project in 1898 ended in embarrassing failure and a waste of the government’s resources.  Without photos or flight demonstrations, the United States’ government’s hands were tied.

John E. Clapper of the British army actually visited the Wrights in Dayton in 1904. Even though it obviously showed more interest than the United States, the British government ultimately was reluctant to enlist use of the Wrights’ plane due to a desire to have a homegrown aeronautical program.

Furthermore, the French were even more intrigued than the British about the Wrights’ flying machine. A special military group of representatives visited the brothers in 1905. The kink in the Wrights’ armor throughout this entire process was their desire to keep their flying machine technology secret and protected. This limited demonstration flights and limited proof behind their claim. This put pressure on governments to make deals based on limited evidence, which wasn’t likely to happen. The French would wind up leaving with no contract signed due to the lack of a demonstration flight.


In 1908, the U.S. Army developed a list of specifications it required for an airplane and they finally accepted a bid from the Wright brothers. Months later, the French would sign a contract for a Wright airplane and it would allow a syndicate of that nation to sell further produced Wright Brothers planes. Once all of these orders were in place, it only took a few demonstration flights for them to seal the deals and cement themselves in history for eternity.

Why did it take so long for man to realize the dream of flight? One of the main reasons that man took so long to realize the dream of flight is the lack of innovation and imagination. For a long time, taking the sky like birds seemed too far-fetched and even too arrogant of an idea. It seemed that man accepted that, since we were born without wings, our place was to stay firmly on the ground. The book uses the example of the Condor I experiment to show this. In the experiment, balloons were fashioned to a two-man gondola, which was successfully flown over a plain in Peru. The episode proved that South Americans actually had the means for flight, if they had fully imagined or desired to take to the sky. Another reason why the dream of flight took so long was the complicated nature of flying machines. The theories and even the building of such machines required such precision and attention to detail that it would have been possibly for one engineer or even one team of engineers to figure out everything on their own. Therefore, it is perfectly natural that the history of aviation shows multiple epiphanies and breakthroughs reached by many different scientists and inventors, each contributing something different that others can then build upon. When did the era of modern aviation begin and why? The modern era of aviation began with Sir George Cayley. He, like many others, was fascinated with the idea of flight. Specifically, he strove for efficient heavier-than-air flight. This required the testing of many theories and applications through construction. What set Cayley apart was that he was the first to try theories through the building and testing of actual flying machine models. His experimentation with models led to the trying out of many fixed-wing gliders. In fact, Cayley is credited as being the first aeronautical engineer. The reason that Cayley and his models are seen as such a big step is that his experimentations showed the movement of aviation theory from simply being in theory books to actually being tested and used in real life. This meant that people were actually starting to see flight as something that was actually possible, rather than just excellent fantasy. Cayley’s experiments also led many others to follow suit, including the Wright brothers. When and what was La Grande Semaine d’Aviation de Champagne and what significance does it have in aviation history? La Grande Demaine d’Aviation de Champagne was a large aviation event, which included several flying competitions in distance, height, passenger-carrying ability as well as many others. While the event was originally meant to be a way for aviation experts to be known to the public and show of their flying machines (as well as a way for local champagne companies to promote their product), it also contributed to the development of flight. The event gathered not only many spectators, but many aviation enthusiasts (both new and experienced). This led to the showing and testing of several different types of models, a clear representation of the benefits and fallbacks of different applications of engineering. Also, the competitive nature of the event caused many flyers to bring their “A-game”, which resulted in many new broken records. The mass success of the event led to other such air-events all over Europe.

Wings Questions #1


1. What impact did flight have on life in the twentieth century?

Some claim that flight, more than anything else changed the very existence of the human race. Many say this due to the positives such as increased communication and faster transportation, which allows for further development of technology and culture. The only thing this can be compared to is the recent development of the digital age, in which face-to-face meetings can happen from thousands of miles away. Both changed the way the world works. There are also those who claim that flight has had a largely negative effect due to its use in war. Further back, even than the civil war, armies were using balloons to give sight to the artillery. In World Wars I and II, planes were used to drop bombs, and shoot each other from the sky, causing widespread devastation and involving more deaths than just those on the front lines. However, planes can drop more than bombs, as evidenced by the Berlin Airlift in which outside countries dropped supplies over Berlin to help those inside stay alive. Flight has given devastated countries the ability to receive aid in a timely manner after a disaster. In conclusion, flight had very many positive and negative effects, but the overall impact cannot be ignored as it has changed the landscape of the world, in more than a figurative sense.

2. Why did it take so long for man to realize the dream of flight?
Otto Lilienthal, who achieved flight at the end of the nineteenth century, insisted that the ancients could have realized the same. Indeed, the materials were available and I have to believe that the will to fly was strong even then. It is understandable that they did not achieve powered flight, or even a glided flight like Otto Lilienthal, because they did not have the same understanding of physics that we now do, nor had they yet achieved powered transportation in any form. However, buoyant flight, as though in a balloon was possible. Two balloonists constructed and flew in a balloon made of only materials available to the Inca, and Archimedes described the principle of buoyant flight. The only explanation that the author gives is the lack of natural examples of this type of flight. Flight with wings was demonstrated by birds and insects, but no animal has a balloon, so the only example was smoke. I find it unlikely that those who did not know better would think of harnessing the power of air, that which is so elusive how could it be trapped. Therefore, the major reason the ancients never flew was most likely simply a lack of imagination in those capable of the construction of a flight apparatus.



6. How did the United States government and other countries respond to the Wrights’ efforts to sell their invention?

The Wrights were very careful when they first developed the ability to fly, careful to not let the secret out. The reason for this is obvious, so many were trying to get into the air that if their designs, or even pictures of their aircraft were made public they would likely be stolen. Unfortunately, the governments of the world needed a little more proof. This caused both the United States, and other governments like the French to hesitate in signing a contract. The negotiations failed and the Wrights were unable to sell their aircraft for a few years. Eventually, however, Wilbur made some demonstration flights in France and Orville did the same in Virginia. Finally, there was conclusive proof that the Wright brothers had achieved the impossible, truly powered flight. After that, the contracts were signed and Wilbur and Orville Wright had finally taken their rightful place in history as well as gained the wealth to go with it.

Taylor McKinley Aviation Blog Post #1- Amazon Prime Air

Amazon Prime has come up with an amazing new technology involving aviation-- Amazon Prime Air.  The goal of the company is to have customers' packages to their front door within thirty minutes of ordering from Amazon.com.  To do this, Amazon would be using unmanned aerial vehicles to get their products to their consumers in such a short period of time.  View the video of a recent test flight here:

According to their website, seeing a fleet of Amazon Prime Air drones in the sky will one day be as common as seeing delivery trucks on the road is today!  How futuristic (and a bit scary!)  The website also says that they will be ready to provide this service in 2015 when the FAA sets their rules in place to ensure public safety.

The technological advances of aviation today are quite mind-blowing.  I wonder what the Wright brothers would say if they saw this today?

1. What impact did flight have on life in the twentieth century?

The impact of flight on life in the twentieth century is almost immeasurable.  Flight impacted life in several different ways.  First, and most obviously, flight became a huge component of war and weapons in the 20th century.  Seeing how far the world came in aviation between the Wright brothers and the first World War is amazing.  The twentieth century consisted of so many rapid advances in the technology of aviation, and Wrold War I is a perfect example of these advances.

Another example is that flight opened up the world to everyone.  For example, when Louis Bleriot flew over the English Channel, Lord Northcliff proclaimed that England was "no longer an island."  Soon, the whole world could proclaim this statement when Charles Lindbergh flew over the Atlantic Ocean.  Communication and collaboration would soon be much more accessible because of aviation.


6. How did the United States government and other countries respond to the Wrights’ efforts to sell their invention?

When the brothers filed their original patent on March 23, 1903, they were promptly rejected by an official who gave a good recommendation: "employ an attorney skilled in patent proceedings."  The Wright brothers heeded this advice and Henry A. Toulmin helped them acquire Patent No. 821,393 on May 22, 1906.

After this, the brothers continued trying to sell their machine, a feat that they had been trying to achieve long before they received a patent.  The US Army had very little interest in the brothers because of how embarrassing the Langley project of 1898-1903 had been.  Trying to avoid any and all repeats of that incident, the US Army immediately dismissed the claims of the brothers, especially because there were no photos or flight demonstrations in an attempt to protect their invention.  

The governments of Europe were more interested in the brothers than the US.  The officer most responsible for aeronautics in the British army, Colonel John E. Capper, actually came to visit the brothers in Dayton in 1904.  In the end, he believed that Britain should develop its own aeronautical talent rather than purchasing from another country.

France was the country with the strongest interest in the Wright brother's invention, but they also would not sign a contract without a demonstration flight.  No country would sign a contract, so the brothers sought out assistance from Charles Flint & Company, who eventually led to the US Army accepting a bid from the Wright brothers.


7. When and what was La Grande Semaine d’Aviation de Champagne and what significance does it have in aviation history?

This event was the first great aerial spectacular--a full week of flying activity that attracted many of the world's aviators to the Plains of Bethany.  The event was held from Sunday, August 22, to Sunday, August 29, 1909.  Prizes totaling 167,000 francs were given for different aviation feats such as distance, speed, altitude, and passenger-carrying competitions.  Several pilots competed in this event, but as usual, the Wrights declined to participate, noting that "it did not make good business sense to compete with latecomers who were infringing on their patents."  This event had a huge impact on aviation history.  It marked the transition between the era of the invention of the airplane and the birth of the aviation industry.

Wings Questions 1: Alexander Schlater

2. Why did it take so long for man to realize the dream of flight?

The events leading to the realization of flight were many. For man to realize such a dream, however, man must first dream of flight. While this is surely and ancient concept, one must look at the inspirations for flight, namely, the observations of flight in the natural world; flight-capable animals. Such animals achieve flight by the vibrating or flapping of their wings. Never had man seen an animal float above the ground by being lighter than the surrounding air, and therefor never had man dreamed of flying in this, the simplest of all ways. Even flight with wings was not as simple as the birds would make it seem though, as is evident by the first flying machine being very dissimilar to any animal of nature. One cannot fly by simply strapping on some artificial wings and flapping his arms in the wind. The evolution of flight among animals came from years of small innovations in design, and so would the evolution of artificial flight. Though the materials far preceded the realization of flight, it is not enough to possess the materials if you do not understand the principles underlying the general concept, thus was the realization of flight so delayed.

5. Why did Wilbur and Orville Wright achieve success before their contemporaries?

The success of the Wright brothers was many faceted, but in my opinion is largely contributed to their conquering of one of the most trying of all problems related to flight, controlling the machine. What led to the failure, discouragement, and occasionally even the untimely end of so many others, was their inability to control their machines, inevitably leading to crashes and injuries, requiring complete reconstruction of their machine, and physical and mental healing of themselves. Amidst all of this trouble, it is no surprise that the most enthusiastic of engineers would get discouraged. The Wright brothers early conquering of the control problem is one of the primary means of their success. However, one cannot ignore their background in cycling which was often likened to aviation at the time, as well as their general sense of ingenuity which developed over their entire careers of manufacturing.

6. How did the United States government and other countries respond to the Wrights’ efforts to sell their invention?

Initial response by government officials to purchase the Wrights' invention was not good. Though the enthusiasm for heavier than air flight was alive and widespread and the use of aviation for political and military purposes was well conceivable, it was the result of circumstance that delayed proceedings. Not only was the government recovering from bad press over their sizable investment in a complete failure of aviation engineering, but the Wrights themselves were attempting to fly under the radar and keep the workings of their flying machine a secret to defend their profitability off of it. With such a high time of aviation inventors, unfortunately, came a height of patent infringement. Unsurprisingly, selling a large scale, first of its kind, flying machine sans proof of flying capabilities, did not prove fruitful, in any nation. The brothers did, however, manage to elicit notable sales following long awaited demonstrations of their aircraft.
